The Murray Basin Rail project is a multi-phased project to standardise freight rail between Mildura and Geelong and improve the rail transport infrastructure in the Murray Basin region.

Stage 1 - Major periodic maintenance on the Mildura and Hopetoun lines.
Stage 2 - Upgrades to the Maryborough to Ararat, Maryborough to Dunolly, Dunolly to Yelta and Ouyen to Murrayville lines.
Stage 3 - Upgrades to the Dunolly to Manangatang and Korong Vale to Sea Lake lines.
Stage 4 - Upgrades to the Gheringhap to Maryborough lines.

Stage 1 was completed in 2016.
